Can the same debt be reported twice by a creditor and a collector?
Short answer
Both tradelines can legally appear, because they are two separate accounts reporting one debt's history. What is not allowed is both showing an active balance. Once the debt is sold or assigned, the original creditor must report $0 and a transferred or sold status.
Two live balances inflate your total debt and can be disputed as inaccurate under FCRA §611 and as an accuracy failure by the furnisher under §623(a)(1). This is one of the highest-success disputes because the error is objective and easy for a furnisher to confirm.
Check the dates too. Both entries must carry the same date of first delinquency, because that date controls when the seven-year clock ends. A collector that re-ages the debt with a newer delinquency date is committing a separate §605(c) violation.
Screenshot all three bureau reports before disputing. Duplicate reporting frequently appears on one bureau and not the others, and the comparison is your evidence.
