What do I do when a credit bureau says my dispute was verified?
Short answer
Send a Method-of-Verification request under FCRA §611(a)(7). The bureau must describe the procedure it used, including the business contacted, within 15 days of your request. Most 'verified' results come from an automated e-OSCAR code exchange, and that description often shows no real investigation happened.
Pair the MOV request with a direct dispute to the furnisher under FCRA §623(b). The furnisher has its own investigation duty once notified through the bureau, and a direct written dispute creates a second, independently enforceable record.
If the MOV response is boilerplate, non-responsive, or never arrives, that is your CFPB complaint. Cite the date of the original dispute, the date of the verification, the date of the MOV request, and the specific subsection ignored.
Re-sending the same dispute letter unchanged is the most common mistake. Bureaus can mark repeat disputes frivolous under §611(a)(3), so every round must add something new: a document, a different statutory theory, or the verification failure itself.
